Visual brainstorming is about recording divergent thoughts visually. Börekçi (2017) defines visual brainstorming as a “method that exercises creative thinking”; as a way of idea generation (p.3). It is a skill students need to be taught, not just assumed they can do automatically. Everything from generating quick sketches to how to think divergently must be modeled and practiced. Divergent thinking is a necessary step to creative thinking (along with convergent thinking). Applied through the discipline of visual arts integration, students are able to utilize visual brainstorming to generate authentic solutions to a project’s objectives. Recording ideas visually also allows all students, no matter their literacy skill level, to successfully record and document their thought process. Creative thinking is also one of the 21st century skills, and visual brainstorming is a way to begin the process in the elementary school.
