Inquiry-based learning is about giving control of student learning back to the students. Harris (2017) sums it up neatly when stating, “inquiry-based learning means students have ownership of topic, presentation format, and questions” (p.26). Inquiry-based learning allows students to try, fail, revise their thinking, try again, and engage in the creative process. Overcoming failure and developing a growth mindset is a life skill that can successfully be taught in the visual arts integrated classroom, through the use of inquiry-based learning. Art integration projects allow students to make choices about how they will explore and demonstrate their learning, from beginning to end. The teacher acts as a guide in the process.
